Curaçao Carnival 2027

Bon bini, and welcome to Karnaval! Carnival in Curaçao isn't one wild weekend. It's a whole season of tumba music, feathers and sequins, and streets full of dancing that builds from January until the night before Ash Wednesday. We love it, and we also know it's busy, hot and gloriously unpunctual. Here's how to plan Curaçao Carnival 2027 so you catch the best of it.
What Carnival is in Curaçao, and when it happens

Carnival follows the church calendar, and the anchor is Ash Wednesday, Feb 10, 2027. Everything counts back from there: the music contests fill January, and the biggest parades land in the final days before Lent.
- The season opens in early January. In 2026 the official opening was Jan 3. The 2027 opening date is not announced yet.
- It's organized by FDKK (Fundashon Desaroyo Karnaval Korsou), the island's carnival foundation. Events company Beehives won the tender to run the 2026 and 2027 editions, per reporting cited by Curaçao Playbook.
- It's all about tumba. Tumba is the cheerful music and dance of Curaçao Carnival, and the lyrics are always positive. Groups spend much of the year making their costumes.
- It ends with King Momo. The Farewell parade traditionally ends with the burning of the Rei Momo figure at midnight before Ash Wednesday.
How it differs from Carnival on Aruba or Bonaire: we haven't found a source comparing them, so we're leaving that out for now.
Tumba Festival: crowning the Tumba King or Queen

The Tumba Festival is a days-long music contest. Artists compete for the title of Tumba King or Queen (Rei or Reina di Tumba), and the winning song becomes the official anthem of that year's Carnival. Qualifying rounds run early in the week and the final is on Friday.
- 2026: Jan 26–30 at the Curaçao Festival Center, in Brievengat. Thirty tumberos, nine of them women, made the final. Charelson "Sontje" Mercelina was crowned Rei di Tumba 2026 with "Awe tami so kubo".
- 2027: not announced yet. The official Nos Tumba platform showed no 2027 dates when we checked. Festival nights are ticketed.
Hear the winning tumba once and you'll be humming it at every parade.
The parades

Curaçao Carnival 2027 dates below come from a secondary guide that gets its times from local authorities. FDKK had not published the official 2027 program when we checked, so treat every date as Reported and check back. All times are indicative, and the guide warns starts can run 1–2 hours late. That's poko poko, island time.
| Date (2027) | Parade | Indicative time | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun Jan 24 | Horse Parade (Marcha di Kabai) | 4:00–9:00 PM | Starts Pater Euwensweg, Otrobanda; runs north to Jan Noorduynweg |
| Sun Jan 31 | Children's Parade | 2:00–7:00 PM | Palù Blanku roundabout to Brionplein, about 3 miles |
| Fri Feb 5 | Teen Parade | 6:00–11:00 PM | Rooseveltweg/Jan Noorduynweg to Brionplein |
| Sat Feb 6 | Bandabou Parade | 1:00–8:00 PM | Barber |
| Sun Feb 7 | Gran Marcha (Grand Parade) | 11:00 AM–7:00 PM | Same route as the Teen Parade |
| Mon Feb 8 | Teen Farewell Parade | 2:00–8:00 PM | Teen Parade route |
| Tue Feb 9 | Farewell Parade (Marcha di Despedida), the "parade of lights" | Officially 3:00 PM; real start likely about 5:00 PM | Gran Marcha route |
| Tue Feb 9, midnight | Burning of King Momo | Midnight | End of the Farewell Parade |
| Sat Feb 13 | Awards ceremony (Entrega di Premio) | not announced yet | Curaçao Festival Center |
About King Momo: in 2026, the burning was replaced with a fireworks and laser show at midnight. That year's Rei Momo honored Benjamin "Shon Benchi" Wefer, who is living, and the figure isn't burned while the honoree is alive. Whether 2027 brings back the burning is not announced yet.
Carnival Monday is a public holiday, reported for Feb 8, 2027 (see our What's On calendar).
The route and where to watch

The main parades end at Brionplein (Brion Square) in Otrobanda, beside the pontoon bridge. Recent routes ran along Schottegatweg West and Weg naar Welgelegen, then Roodeweg and Breedestraat. The Horse Parade is the only one that runs south to north. All the others head toward downtown.
- Watching is free. Pick a spot anywhere along the route.
- Locals stake out spots early, often with tape and chairs. Get there early, especially near the finish in Otrobanda.
- Track the parade on your phone. The free app Und'e Kabes Ta? shows where the front of the parade is and can send you an alert when it's close. Great for skipping a long wait in the sun.
Grandstand and seat tickets
Private vendors sell paid grandstand seats, usually in the final weeks before the parades. These areas can include seating, shade, a bar and restrooms.
- For example (2026): the Carnival Dome stand at F.D. Rooseveltweg 35 sold Grand Parade tickets at XCG 100 regular, XCG 195 premium and XCG 50 for kids, plus a three-parade package at XCG 175. Tickets included parking at Isla Post 6 with a shuttle. 2027 prices are not announced yet.
- Where to buy: check Caribbean Ticketshop and Otra Tickets (see What's On) closer to the season.
Joining a carnival group

Want to dance the route yourself? You can sign up with one of the carnival groups. The guide we used names five large groups, and tour operator Corendon as one way in. Expect to pay at least about US$850. That includes a costume and a spot in the Gran Marcha. (That's the price for the current season on the source's page. Confirm the 2027 price and deadline with the group before you book.) Costume fittings and sign-up deadlines vary by group (not announced yet), so start asking in the fall.
What to wear and bring

- Sun protection. You'll probably stand in direct sun for a long time, so bring sunscreen, a cap and a bottle of water.
- Light, comfortable clothes and good shoes. Expect hours on your feet (our advice).
- A small bag and very few valuables. Canada's travel advice notes petty theft rises around Carnival season. Leave nothing visible in a parked car.
- A charged phone for the parade-tracker app.
Heat and hydration
The Gran Marcha runs for about eight hours in the middle of the day. Drink water steadily, take shade breaks and keep kids in hats. If you want shade and a restroom, a grandstand seat is worth it. Night parades like the Farewell Parade are cooler but run late.
Road closures and parking

Expect road closures and slow traffic around the route on parade days. Park well away and walk, or stay within walking distance. On Bandabou Parade day, expect jams on the road to Westpunt and use the southwest route where you can. Some grandstands offer parking and a shuttle (in 2026, from Isla Post 6). Official closure maps for 2027: not announced yet, so watch FDKK's channels.
Where to stay for Carnival in Curaçao
Carnival falls in Curaçao's December-to-April high season, so book early, especially anything within walking distance of Otrobanda or Punda. Otrobanda puts you near the finish at Brionplein. Punda and Pietermaai are a walk across the pontoon bridge. See our where-to-stay guide.
