Christmas in Curaçao

Bon bini, and Bon Pasku! Christmas in Curaçao doesn't come with snow. It comes with warm sea air, string lights over Punda, gaita music drifting out of the bars, and a New Year's Eve so loud you'll feel it in your chest. We love this stretch of the year, and we also know it's the island's busiest. Here's how to enjoy it without spending your vacation waiting in line.
Curaçao in December: what to expect
- It's peak season. December 2025 brought a record 80,891 stayover visitors, according to tourism-board figures reported by Curaçao Playbook. The last week of the year concentrates that crowd, so book flights, your room, a rental car and holiday dinners as early as you can.
- The weather is beach weather. December averages a 30.3 °C (about 87 °F) high on the island's official 1991–2020 climate normals, and Atlantic hurricane season ends Nov 30.
- The beaches fill up. Locals tell us the stretch from Jan Thiel all the way up to Grote Knip gets packed over Christmas, because islanders are off work and on the sand too. Go early, or head west, where things stay quieter.
- You'll want a car. Taxis add up fast, and locals recommend renting. Rental fleets get booked out over the holidays, so reserve now (see our car rental guide).
Bon Pasku: Christmas traditions

The sound. Christmas in Curaçao has its own soundtrack. Gaita, the Venezuelan-rooted Christmas music, fills bars and squares from late November. Aguinaldo groups, called parranderos, play guitar, maracas and tambourine. Then there's tambú, the island's African-rooted drum music and dance, sung in Papiamentu. Its real season is Christmas and New Year. If a group starts up near you, the local custom is simple: join in.
The lights. Punda is decorated with lights through December, and squares and bridges in Punda and Otrobanda get dressed up too.
Punda Vibes Christmas Edition. On December Thursdays, Punda runs a holiday edition of its weekly street night, 18:00–22:00 (6–10 PM). There's live music, dance shows, gift shopping and a fireworks show at 20:15 (8:15 PM). Locals say Punda gets busy on Thursday evenings, so arrive early.
The 25th and 26th. Christmas Day is about family: church, gifts, lunch at home, beach barbecues, and driving around to see the lights.
Holiday foods to try
- Ayaka, a parcel of seasoned cornmeal dough filled with slow-cooked meat, raisins and olives, wrapped in banana leaf and steamed. It came over from Venezuela, where it's called hallaca.
- Ham di Pasku, the Christmas ham, glazed with pineapple and brown sugar and often eaten sliced on bread for breakfast.
- Keshi yena (baked stuffed cheese) and bolo di kashupete (cashew cake).
- Pan di jamon, a ham bread with Venezuelan roots.
- Oliebollen, Dutch fried dough balls dusted with powdered sugar.
- Ponche crema, a creamy, spiced holiday drink.
A dushi tip: a lot of this is home cooking. Some restaurants and hotel Christmas buffets add holiday dishes in December, and those tables book up.
What's closed: Dec 25, Dec 26 and Jan 1
By law, Curaçao has two Christmas holidays, Christmas Day (Dec 25) and Second Christmas Day (Dec 26), plus New Year's Day (Jan 1). New Year's Eve is a partial day off. In 2026 that works out to Friday Dec 25, Saturday Dec 26, and a half-day holiday on Thursday Dec 31. New Year's Day 2027 is a Friday.
- Banks and most shops close on the 25th and 26th. Restaurants and beach clubs mostly stay open with holiday hours, so check before you drive.
- On Dec 31 most businesses close around noon.
- Beaches: Playa PortoMari is closed on Dec 31. Cas Abao charges its Sunday/holiday rate of $7 per car on holidays.
- Groceries: stock up by Dec 24 and Dec 30. (We haven't confirmed supermarket holiday hours for 2026; see the flags in the notes.)
Curaçao New Year's Eve: pagara and fireworks
New Year's Eve is the island's biggest night. Felis Aña Nobo!
The pagara. A pagara is a long string of firecrackers that fills a street and goes off in one rolling roar. It's meant to chase away bad spirits and welcome the new year. Bars and businesses throw pagara parties and fireworks shows every day from Dec 26 through Dec 31.
The big one: Pietermaai, Dec 31. The biggest firecracker event on the island takes over Pietermaai on New Year's Eve, starting in the early afternoon, with DJs, live bands, food stalls and specialty bars. Recent reporting says Pietermaaiweg closes to traffic at noon. The main pagara runs about 1.5 km, from the Scuba Lodge end of the waterfront down to Café de Tijd, and has been lit around 3 PM. Local news has described the pagara program running from 2 PM to 7 PM. Pietermaai Music Live's daytime party has listed noon–9 PM, a 3 PM pagara and free admission. (2026 times aren't announced yet. Follow the Pietermaai District Curaçao Facebook page, which the tourist board points to for details.) Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and earplugs for the kids.
Dutch New Year at 7 PM. Midnight in the Netherlands is 7 PM in Curaçao, and plenty of bars count down then too.
Fireworks week. Free public fireworks shows run from Dec 27 through New Year's Eve. They get very crowded, so arrive early.
Where to watch at midnight: - Handelskade, Punda and Brionplein, Otrobanda, for the public celebration and fireworks over Sint Anna Bay. - Jan Thiel Beach and Mambo Beach Boulevard beach clubs. - A ticketed party: in a past year, local news listed Papagayo Beach Club's New Year dinner from 7 PM, Cascada's rooftop party in Punda from 9 PM, and Zest in Jan Thiel from 10 PM. Check each venue for its 2026 program. - Crowd notes: in a past year, authorities banned folding chairs and barbecues near the Queen Emma Bridge (the Pontjesbrug) and closed the Queen Juliana Bridge to cars. Locals say downtown parking is very limited on New Year's Eve, though it's fine on Christmas Eve. Get dropped off, or park early and walk.
Want calm instead? Locals point to resorts like Avila Beach Hotel as a quieter refuge during the holidays, and the west side stays more relaxed.
