Guide
Curaçao on a budget

Target queries: "Curaçao on a budget", "free beaches Curaçao", "cheap eats Curaçao"
Short answer
The best west-coast beaches are free, lunch at the Old Market costs less than a beach-club cocktail, and the bus runs to Westpunt. What costs money here is the rental car and the boat days, so choose those carefully.
Where to stay (value)
- Best-value bases: Otrobanda and Pietermaai guesthouses and apartments (walk to Punda; bus hub), or a self-catering apartment in Julianadorp or Jan Thiel if you'll have a car. Area detail: Where to stay.
Beaches: free and cheap
| Beach | Entry | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grote Knip | Free (parking free) | Paid restroom about $1; chairs extra |
| Kleine Knip | Free | Minimal facilities |
| Playa Lagun | Free (parking free) | Turtles; rocky entry |
| Playa Piskadò | Free | Chairs about $3, umbrellas about $2 |

Eating
- Plasa Bieu (Old Market), Punda: Krioyo lunch at communal tables, cash only. Mains from XCG 15 (stewed chicken, goat, red beans), fish XCG 25, sides XCG 10, water XCG 2.50. Lunch only, roughly 11:00–15:00, closed Sunday; one guide says weekdays only, so go Mon–Fri to be safe.
- Pastechi: about 2–3 guilders each.
- Batidos: Disfruta Más (the green truck on Caracasbaaiweg) charges ƒ8 small / ƒ9 large.
- Truk'i pan (late-night food trucks): grilled meat with fries or bread, mostly from about 10 p.m. until 3–4 a.m.. Example menu (Karbon, Winston Churchillweg): chicken from ƒ15, steak from ƒ17, mix platters from ƒ32.
- Groceries and self-catering:.
- Tipping: restaurants often add ~10% service already; check the bill before tipping more.
Getting around
- Bus (Autobusbedrijf Curaçao): ANG/XCG 2.00 in the city and east, 2.50 to the west (Tera Kora, Lagun, Westpunt); every route starts and ends in Willemstad, with no direct airport bus to the beach areas. Hours are limited (hourly, roughly 6 a.m.–10 p.m. per the US State Department).
- Taxis are unmetered, so agree the fare first.
- A rental car split four ways often beats taxis for west-coast days.
Things to do for free or cheap
- Punda Vibes every Thursday evening: music, stalls, fireworks around 8:15 p.m., free.
- Walk Handelskade, the Queen Emma pontoon bridge and the Otrobanda murals .
- Snorkel the free west-coast bays with your own gear (see the packing list).

Money tips
- Pay in guilders where prices are listed in guilders: the official peg is 1.79, but businesses may apply slightly different fair-practice rates (1.77–1.80).
- Carry small cash for free beaches (restrooms, chairs) and Plasa Bieu (cash only).
