Choose your island
Curaçao vs Aruba: which island fits your trip?
Bon bini! They're neighbors and they're both warm, sunny and Dutch Caribbean, but they feel very different. We love Curaçao and we'll say so, but here's the honest version so you pick the island that fits you. Updated October 30, 2026.

The short answer
- Pick Curaçao if you want small coves, snorkeling straight off the beach, a colorful capital with real neighborhoods, and you're happy to drive.
- Pick Aruba if you want one long stretch of resort beach, a bus along the hotel strip, and no car.
Side by side
| Curaçao | Aruba | |
|---|---|---|
| Beaches | Dozens of small coves, many on the west coast, often with a beach bar and a fee for chairs. Great for swimming and snorkeling straight off the sand. | The Aruba Tourism Authority describes the south and west as resort country; Arubus calls Eagle Beach a wide public beach and Palm Beach calm and good for swimming. |
| Snorkel and diving | Shore snorkeling and diving are a big part of island life, from Playa Piskadò's turtles to the Tugboat wreck. A car opens up the west-coast sites. | Arubus notes calm Baby Beach as good for kids and new snorkelers. Most snorkeling is by boat trip or off the hotel-strip beaches. |
| Food | Local krioyo plates, Dutch and Caribbean mash-ups, and a busy Pietermaai and Punda restaurant scene. | A big, resort-led dining scene along the hotel strip, plus Oranjestad. |
| Vibe | A real working capital: Willemstad's painted Punda and Otrobanda neighborhoods, art, and a mix of locals and visitors. | Polished and easygoing. Resorts, shopping and nightlife in the south and west; rugged coast and Arikok National Park in the north (Aruba Tourism Authority). |
| Crowds | Spread out. Beaches are smaller, so a popular one can feel busy, but there is usually another cove down the road. | The resorts cluster along one stretch of coast, so the main beaches are busier and more built-up. |
| Size | About 40 miles long, per Royal Caribbean's Curaçao page. | 19.6 miles long and six miles across, per the Aruba Tourism Authority. |
| Getting around | A rental car is the easy way to see the island. See our car rental guide. | The Aruba Tourism Authority says Arubus runs along the hotel strip every 15 minutes from 5:45 a.m. until 6 p.m., then every 40 minutes until 11:30 p.m. Many visitors skip the car. |
Weather and hurricanes
Both islands are dry and breezy. Aruba's tourism authority says it lies just outside the hurricane belt. Curaçao's Meteorological Department puts all three ABC islands on the southern fringe of the belt, says tropical cyclones usually pass to the north, and calls serious damage rare. The NOAA Atlantic season runs from June 1 to November 30. Curaçao's rainy season runs from October to January, and showers often come at night or early in the morning. Travel insurance is still a good idea in the fall.
Flights
The Curaçao Tourist Board lists American, United, Delta and JetBlue among the airlines flying from North America. Aruba also has nonstop flights from US cities. Schedules change by season, so compare both on your airline's site. When you land in Curaçao, our airport guide covers the arrival steps.
Cost
We don't publish average prices because they change by season and by hotel. As a rule of thumb, Curaçao has more apartments, guesthouses and small hotels alongside its resorts, while Aruba's stays cluster around big resorts on the hotel strip. In Curaçao, budget for a car. Our Curaçao budget guide shows where to save.

Questions we get
Is Curaçao or Aruba better for snorkeling?
For snorkeling from shore, we pick Curaçao: you can walk in from many west-coast beaches. Aruba has calm spots like Baby Beach, but more of its snorkeling is by boat.
Are Curaçao and Aruba outside the hurricane belt?
Not quite. Aruba's tourism site says it is just outside the belt. Curaçao's Meteorological Department says the ABC islands sit on its southern fringe, and that direct hits are rare. The NOAA season runs June 1 to November 30.
Do I need a car in Curaçao?
For beach-hopping, yes, we recommend one. In Aruba, the Arubus runs along the hotel strip, so many visitors manage without one.
Is Curaçao cheaper than Aruba?
It depends on your dates, hotel and how you eat. We don't quote averages here. Compare live hotel prices for your dates on the map below, and price a car before you decide.
Can I fly nonstop to Curaçao from North America?
Yes. The Curaçao Tourist Board lists American, United, Delta and JetBlue among the airlines flying from North America. Check your airline for the current schedule.
When is the best time to go?
Curaçao's Meteorological Department says the dry season runs from February through May and the rainy season from October to January, with showers often at night or early morning.
